Understanding Jesus’ illustrations

Posted on May 12, 2019November 2, 2025

How are we to understand God’s word today without help?  Why are the Sacred Secrets of God hidden?  Should we read the Bible even though we do not understand it?   What did Jesus say about understanding God’s word?

Mark 4:9-13… So, he added the word: “Let him that has ears to listen, listen (Comprehend).” Now when he got to be alone, those around him with the twelve began questioning him on the illustrations. And he proceeded to say to them: “To You the sacred secret of the kingdom of God has been given, but to those outside all things occur in illustrations, in order that, though looking, they may look and yet not see, (Perceive), and, though hearing, they may hear and yet not get the sense of it, nor ever turn back and forgiveness be given them.” Further, he said to them: “YOU do not know this illustration, and so how will YOU understand all the other illustrations?”

After reading this passage of Scripture I noticed two things, first listening to the sacred secrets of the kingdom and understanding or comprehending them is a gift from God.

The next thing I see is a fulfillment of prophecy about people not getting the forgiveness of sins even though they read the scriptures, they are not to receive understanding. They are searching for answers and earnestly researching about these kingdom truths, but these things are hidden from them. But why you may ask?

The apostle Paul Points out the answer:

Acts 28:25-27… “The holy spirit aptly spoke through Isaiah the prophet to YOUR forefathers, saying, ‘Go to this people and say: “By hearing, YOU will hear but by no means understand; and, looking, YOU will look but by no means see. For the heart of this people has grown unreceptive, and with their ears they have heard without response, and they have shut their eyes; that they should never see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn back, and I should heal them … Isaiah 6:9-10

So, why is the sacred secret of the kingdom hidden?  It all has to do with their heart condition, our Father in heaven searches the hearts of men to see who will worship in spirit and in truth, this is a fundamental key to understanding anything about God’s kingdom.

How Are We Worshiping

This is a very good question, how are we supposed to worship God without understanding?

John 4:19-24…YOU worship what YOU do not know; we worship what we know, because salvation originates with the Jews. Nevertheless, the hour is coming, and it is now, when the true worshipers will worship the Father with spirit and truth, for, indeed, the Father is looking for suchlike ones to worship him. God is a Spirit, and those worshiping him must worship with
spirit and truth.”

How are we to worship in spirit? How do we worship in truth?

When you read God’s word do you accept what is written at face value? When you receive information about God and learned it to be true are you so readily willing to give it up without real examination of what you’re being handed to substitute it? Truth does not mind to be examined under scrutiny because after examination has to be real, the truth. But if somebody leaves evidence regarding the item being examined could it be said that you’ve really examined it under the scrutiny truth?

If you are not willing to examine in the light of Scripture, then it might be possible that you may be holding onto the teachings of demons or the dogma man.

But will we be a true worshiper of God, and act in faith or are we more concerned about how we may appear before people?

John 12:35-43… But although he had performed so many signs before them, they were not putting faith in him, so that the word of Isaiah the prophet was fulfilled which he said: “Jehovah, who has put faith in the thing heard by us? And as for the arm of Jehovah, to whom has it been revealed?” The reason why they were not able to believe is that again Isaiah said: “He has blinded their eyes and he has made their hearts hard, that they should not see with their eyes and get the thought with their hearts and turn around and I should heal them.” Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory, and he spoke about him.  All the same, many even of the rulers actually put faith in him, but because of the Pharisees they would not confess [him], in order not to be expelled from the synagogue; for they loved the glory of men more than even the glory of God.

The people of Jesus day held more faith in what teachers had taught them then what their own ears and eyes could see happening right before them through the signs and wonders provided by God through Christ Jesus.

Will you worry about the “what if’s” or if you’re going to throw out of your place of worship?

Think about this:

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is alive and exerts power and is sharper than any two-edged sword and pierces even to the dividing of soul and spirit, and of joints and their marrow, and is able to discern thoughts and intentions of the heart.

We should read God’s word even if we do not understand it at that moment. We need to pray for help asking the Holy Spirit for truth along with understanding and then we need to prepare our hearts.

God knows what our thoughts and our intentions are when we read the holy writings. We need to remember God is searching the hearts of men to see who will worship in spirit and in truth.

Ask yourself will I be the kind of person that will act-in-faith on what I read?  Or will I worry about what other people think when we begin to tell them the things that were learning from the Bible?
