What should we expect to happen in the last days? Calling upon whose name saves us? What signs should we expect? What is this Great and Glorious Day of The Lord all about? How are we to be saved?
Salvation By Whom?
The apostle Peter relates a prophecy that was in partial fulfillment at the time of Pentecost 33 CE. He indicated an especially important point about escaping the days of darkness that were coming upon all mankind.
Acts 2:17-21 “And in the last days,” God says, “I shall pour out some of my spirit upon every sort of flesh, and YOUR sons and YOUR daughters will prophesy and YOUR young men will see visions and YOUR old men will dream dreams; and even upon my men slaves and upon my women slaves I will pour out some of my spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. And I will give portents (Strong’s #G5059) in heaven above and signs on earth below, blood and fire and smoke mist; the sun will be turned into darkness and the moon into blood before the great and illustrious day of Lord (Strong’s #G2962) arrives. And everyone who calls on the name of Lord (Strong’s #G2962) will be saved.”
The apostle Peter rightly identified the pouring out of Holy Spirit as being tied to the prophecy of Joel. But was this a complete fulfillment of the prophecy of Joel at that time and at that place?
Who is this Lord and Master that the apostle Peter is talking about? Is it Yahweh or Jehovah, God the sovereign of the universe?
For us to answers to these especially important questions let us look at the following Scriptures:
Acts 4:12… Furthermore, there is no salvation in anyone else, for there is not another name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must get saved.
Who was the apostle Peter speaking about, that we can gain salvation from? Was this going to be the name of God or someone else?
First, there is a name that has been given to mankind to call upon so that they might get saved. At this point you might want to read in context to be able to answer any more questions that are proposed.
Philippians 2:9-11… For this very reason also God exalted him to a superior position and kindly gave him the name that is above every [other] name, so that in the name of Jesus every knee should bend of those in heaven and those on earth and those under the ground, and every tongue should openly acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.
So, it is the name of Jesus Christ that we have salvation by. Calling out to him we can escape the great day of God’s wrath. We need to take a knee and confess that Jesus Christ is the Lord and the rightful Master of us all, after all, he earned that right.
There Will Be Signs
What else do we know about the great day of the Lord? What aspects did Jesus identify or reveal about these last days? Let us read the next three passages of Scriptures to find out.
Matthew 24:29-31 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then the sign of the Son of man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will beat themselves in lamentation, and they will see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will
send forth his angels with a great trumpet sound, and they will gather his chosen ones together from the four winds, from one extremity of the heavens to their other extremity.”
Mark 13:24-27 “But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling out of heaven, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And then he will send forth the angels and will gather his chosen ones together from the four winds, from earth’s extremity to heaven’s extremity.”
Luke 21:25-28 “Also, there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth anguish of nations, not knowing the way out because of the roaring of the sea and [its] agitation, while men become faint out of fear and expectation of the things coming upon the inhabited earth; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But as these things start to occur, raise yourselves erect and lift YOUR heads up, because YOUR deliverance is getting near.”
The Great and Glorious Day of The Lord is all about these 5 identifiable events that Jesus identified would happen in the last days.
- Signs of the Sun and Moon being Darkened.
- Stars fall from heaven and the Powers of Heaven are Shaken.
- Men become fearful of the events to come.
- They will see the Son of Man coming.
- Deliverance for the Chosen Ones.
