What or who is tutoring you? What was the purpose of the law? Are we under the Law today?
Galatians 3:19-26… Why then was the law given? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise was made would come. The law was put into effect through angels by means of a mediator. 20 Now a mediator is not for just one person, but God is one. 21 Is the law therefore contrary to God’s promises? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that was able to give life, then righteousness would certainly be by the law. 22 But the Scripture has imprisoned everything under sin’s power, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. 23 Before this faith came, we were confined under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith was revealed. 24 The law, then, was our tutor (our guardian) until Christ, so that we could be justified by faith. 25 But since that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor (guardian), 26 for you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
Does this mean that the Law is done away with? Does the tutor stop teaching us?
The Law of God made it known that sin was at work in mankind. The law encouraged mankind to pursue a righteous and Godly course of life. It gave a framework which mankind could operate safely within. God presented to mankind life and death. The choice was ours to live or die by. Deuteronomy 30:19
All the while willful sin was encouraging mankind to participate in the things that were displeasing to God. Ephesians 4:17-19
Under the law forgiveness could be achieved by some type of sacrifice given upon the altar of God. Other sins were not to be forgiven but would incur immediate death.
In the Beginning Adam sold mankind out to the sin that was in the world at that time. So, Adam and his offspring fell victim to the operating spirit of the world. That spirit was in direct opposition to God as part of the ongoing rebellion. Thus mankind became alienated from God from that moment on. Colossians 1:21
The Lord our God begin to work a work of salvation in behalf of mankind. He arranged for the perfect sacrifice and the framework for the forgiveness of sin and the deliverance from the wicked ones.
The Lord our God tested mankind to find out if we could possess the faith in his words. And he found a man Abraham that believed in the word of God, and it was counted to him as righteousness. Genesis 15:6 Abraham became the one that righteousness seed would come. Galatians 3:16
God needed to bring an end to the fear of death that plagued mankind because fear erodes faith. Hebrews 2:9-10
The Tutor
A tutor helps guide a student, but it is the teacher who educates the students. The tutor and the teacher work together in unison. So, the law never really goes away, but it is the framework and the basis to educate all by. Matthew 5:17
How did Christ fulfill the Law? We will answer that question under the next writing called “I Have Fulfilled the law” follow the hyperlink at the end of this writing.
Let me ask you some questions. Do you think it is okay to dishonor your parents or to call down evil upon God’s name?
No, it is not okay to speak ill of God’s name or to dishonor your parents, but these are just 2 of the 10 commandments that God gave that should be observed and they will never go away. Exodus 20:1-17
So, why do you think that it is okay not to observe God’s Sabbath? After all it is also part of the 10 Commandments of God.
Our God provided the Law to help us identify the things that would be clean and unclean before him. This was both for a physical and a spiritual aspect.
Do you think it is okay that if somebody develops leprosy or some type of plague that you just disregarded that fact. That you would continue living with them in the same house, hoping that you will not become infected by them.
When you go camping and you have to defecate in the wild do you not cover up your mess? Did your parents not teach you about these things?
Do you not understand that the Law of God is basic, fundamental, and given for the health and safety of God’s people.
Oh, but I can hear some of you actually saying that we are not Jewish, that the Law was not given to us but to them only. Well then let us look at the letter that the apostle Paul wrote to the Romens about God’s commandments and the law.
Romans 1:32 – here the apostle Paul speaks of those who know the righteous decrees of God, but they continue to practice things that are deserving of death, and they consent with those who practice such things.
The righteous decrees of God are his laws, we learned that from the last writing entitled the “God’s Righteous Decrees.” If you miss reading this follow the hyperlink back to: God’s Righteous Decrees
Romans 2:13 – here Paul states that the doers of the Law are declared righteous.
This is possible because Christ came to become the perpetual sacrifice fulfilling that requirement of the law. Romans 3:25
Romans 3:31 – Paul says that the Law has not been abolished by our faith but to the contrary it becomes established.
If the Law has not gone away has the Law Covenant been done away with? What is the difference between the Law Covenant or the New Covenant?
Hebrews 8:6-13… But Jesus has now obtained a superior ministry, and to that degree He is the mediator of a better covenant, which has been legally enacted on better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion for a second one. 8 But finding fault with His people,[He says: Look, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— 9 not like the covenant that I made with their ancestors on the day I took them by their hands to lead them out of the land of Egypt. I disregarded them, says the Lord, because they did not continue in My covenant. 10 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be My people. 11 And each person will not teach his fellow citizen, and each his brother, saying, “Know the Lord,” because they will all know Me, from the least to the greatest of them. 12 For I will be merciful to their wrongdoing, and I will never again remember their sins. 13 By saying a new covenant, He has declared that the first is old. And what is old, and aging is about to disappear. Jeremiah 31:31-34
The apostle Paul says that there were better promises made as part of the New Covenant. God said that he would put his law in the heart of mankind. By God putting his Laws into the heart of mankind this action become better promise.
We are taught by Christ that from the heart comes forth our motivation, right? Matthew 15:18-20
God knew that the problem of serving him had to do with the disobedience spirit of a man that is operating upon mankind’s heart. So, the better promises that God gave had to do with giving us a new heart and a new spirit.
Ezekiel 11:18-21… When they arrive there, they will remove all its detestable things and practices from it. 19 And I will give them one heart and put a new spirit within them; I will remove their heart of stone from their bodies and give them a heart of flesh, 20 so they may follow My statutes, keep My ordinances, and practice them. Then they will be My people, and I will be their God. 21 But as for those whose hearts pursue their desire for detestable things and practices, I will bring their actions down on their own heads.” This is the declaration of the Lord God.
Is your tutor leading you to Christ? Do you have a faith and a belief in the ability of Christ Jesus blood to save? Have you been born again? Philippians 2:9-11
Have you received the new spirit that God has promised? If you have do you not recognize that you will need to follow God’s commandments, statutes, and ordinances. If you will practice them then you will become God’s people, and he will become your God.
Here is a warning from the Lord Jesus Christ about the law of God.
Matthew 5:17-19… Do not assume that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For I assure you: Until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or one stroke of a letter will pass from the law until all things are accomplished. 19 Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commands and teaches people to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Come Lord Jesus and teach all about God’s righteousness.
